The 2026 design features
“Memories of Him,” a heartfelt painting
by Alice Nell Firth inspired by cherished
memories of her late husband, Nelson Firth.
This painting captures the familiar items of a
waterman’s long day on the Chesapeake
Bay—a crab basket, a buoy, and the well-known
“Bubba boots.” Together, these objects bring
treasured memories not only for Alice Nell,
but also for many families in Poquoson.
Alice Nell and Nelson spent many memorable years on the water and sharing their work at the Poquoson Seafood Festival, where she has exhibited since 1984. An award-winning artist, Alice Nell has received both Best in Show and the Mayor’s Purchase Award. She has also served as chair of the festival’s Arts and Crafts section for the Poquoson Art League and currently serves as President of the Poquoson Art League.
A Poquoson native, Alice Nell began her artistic journey in watercolor. After taking several painting classes, she developed a preference for acrylics, which she often applies to unique surfaces such as bushel-basket lids and furniture.
Through “Memories of Him,” Alice Nell offers a deeply personal tribute that also honors the enduring spirit of Poquoson’s waterfront community. This design shows the familiar tools of a waterman’s life into lasting symbols of love, tradition, and shared heritage—an especially meaningful reflection of the community celebrated by the 2026 Poquoson Seafood Festival.
